A Texas community is grieving after a two-year-old girl who disappeared from her neighborhood was found dead in a nearby creek just hours later.
Aryana Trevino Martinez was reported missing from her San Antonio home on Sunday evening. An Amber Alert was issued as police and community members began searching for the toddler.
She was last seen around 7:45 p.m., wearing a black top and leopard-print trousers.
Just four hours later, the search ended with a heartbreaking discovery.
She was found less than 500 yards from home
According to authorities, surveillance footage appeared to show Aryana walking in the direction of a nearby creek.
Around midnight, her body was discovered in the water, less than 500 yards from her home.
Police have not confirmed the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding how the toddler left her home remain under investigation.
But the person who ultimately found her was not a member of law enforcement.
It was a 22-year-old neighbor who had joined the search.
“Something led me straight to her”
Uriel Ramirez began searching as soon as he heard about the Amber Alert.
His mother, Anna Marie Ramirez, told KSAT that their family immediately felt they needed to help find the missing child.
The search around the creek was difficult. Tall grass and the surrounding terrain made it difficult to see into the water.
But Uriel continued searching.
He eventually climbed onto rocks near the creek and looked down.
That’s when he saw something in the water.
It was Aryana.
Without hesitation, Uriel went into the creek and brought the little girl out.
Later, he struggled to explain exactly how he had found her.
“She’s like an angel and something led me straight to her, like a direct shot,” he said.
“My brain was just, ‘That’s where she is.’”
When he finally came out of the water, his mother was waiting.
His words were heartbreaking in their simplicity:
“I found her.”
A question the neighborhood can’t escape
The discovery has left Aryana’s neighbors devastated — and searching for answers.
Local resident David Alcantar told WOAI that one question keeps coming back to him.
How could a two-year-old child have made it all the way to the creek?
The investigation is continuing, and authorities have not yet released a definitive explanation for what happened.
For the community, however, the focus has shifted from the search to remembering a little girl whose life ended far too soon.

Family members, friends and neighbors are expected to gather for a vigil at 8 p.m. Tuesday to honor Aryana’s memory.
What began as a frantic search following an Amber Alert ended in unimaginable heartbreak.
And for the neighbor who refused to stop looking, one moment will likely stay with him forever — the moment he looked toward the water and somehow knew where to search.
