The series premiered on August 26, 2026, and revisits Mica’s life, her marriage to South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, the final months of their relationship, and the questions that continued after her death. Netflix says the filmmakers used Mica’s journals, text messages, home videos, church footage, police reports and medical records to reconstruct her story.
The documentary has also renewed public discussion about what Mica was experiencing before her death—and how much can really be learned from the private words she left behind.
Mica Miller’s Journals Offer a Rare Look Into Her Final Years
One of the most striking elements of Death of the Pastor’s Wife is the access the filmmakers received to Mica’s personal archive.
With permission from her family, the documentary team examined journals, videos, messages and other material that had remained after her death.
Director Julia Willoughby Nason described the journals as an unusually intimate window into Mica’s inner world. Rather than relying entirely on interviews with people who knew her, the documentary allows viewers to encounter Mica through her own writing.
One journal page shown in the series appears to contain a list of practical tasks, including matters involving the IRS and obtaining an affidavit.
For some viewers, the page became significant for another reason.
They interpreted the list as evidence that Mica was making plans for the future and preparing to take further steps in her efforts to leave her marriage.
But that interpretation needs to be treated carefully.

John-Paul Miller has denied the allegations. He has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. Netflix also notes that the federal criminal case against him concerns separate allegations involving cyberstalking and false statements, not a charge that he caused her death.

The documentary presents testimony and records from Mica’s family, friends and others who knew her, but allegations remain allegations unless established in court.

What Happened After Mica’s Death?
Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024.
Her death was ultimately ruled a suicide by the North Carolina medical examiner. Netflix reports that the investigation was subsequently closed.

At the same time, there has been no homicide charge against JP Miller in connection with her death.

JP Miller Faces Separate Federal Charges
Although JP Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death, he is facing a separate federal criminal case.
In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, prosecutors allege that Miller engaged in unwanted communications with Mica beginning in November 2022. The indictment also alleges conduct involving tracking her vehicle, interfering with her activities and finances, and sharing an intimate image without her consent.
The Justice Department emphasized that the allegations contained in the indictment are accusations and that Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Miller pleaded not guilty.
The cyberstalking charge carries a maximum sentence of five years, while the false-statements charge carries a maximum sentence of two years. Each charge also carries potential financial penalties.
According to Netflix’s August 2026 update, the federal trial has been moved to the October 2026 term. Miller remains free on bond.
The Case Has Also Inspired a Push for Legal Reform
Mica’s story has moved beyond the documentary itself.
Her family has supported proposed legislation in South Carolina that they refer to as “Mica’s Law.”
The proposal, known as SB 702, seeks to address forms of domestic abuse that may not always involve visible physical injuries, including coercive control and psychological, emotional and financial abuse.
According to Netflix, the legislation would also provide additional training for law enforcement officers so they can better recognize patterns of coercive control. The bill did not become law during the 2026 legislative session and is expected to be reconsidered.
For Mica’s family, the issue is not only about revisiting what happened to her.
It is also about whether people experiencing similar situations can receive meaningful help before a crisis develops.
Remembering Mica Beyond the Headlines
One of the most important aspects of Death of the Pastor’s Wife is that the filmmakers attempt to show Mica as more than the circumstances of her death.
She was a musician.
She was a sister.
She was a daughter.
She was someone who grew up in a religious community and developed a strong connection to music and worship.
Her journals, home videos and family footage give viewers glimpses of a person whose life cannot be reduced to the final weeks that made her story nationally known.
That distinction matters.
When stories involving tragedy become documentaries, social-media discussions can sometimes focus almost entirely on unanswered questions.
But a person’s life is larger than the circumstances surrounding their death.
